Curator: What strikes me about this aged sketchbook page, possibly dating from 1912-1915, is the intimate portrayal of a leisure outing. The collection of snapshots, titled "Loentje Onnen met vrienden tijdens een autotocht naar de Grebbelinie bij Wageningen," evokes a sense of gentle nostalgia. Editor: It does have a wistful air. The paper's patina speaks of time, yet the arrangement feels somewhat disjointed, like fragments of a memory haphazardly placed. Are we meant to see a relationship between the different photos? Curator: I find the composition subtly suggestive. The reduced palette creates a subdued tonal harmony, enhancing the photograph's ethereal quality. The juxtaposition of candid moments—figures reclining by a lake, standing in a field, or resting on a grassy slope—invites contemplation of the structure and visual balance. Editor: The materials tell their own story. "Photography on paper, non-digital material", it reads, offering not only an image, but evidence of manual processes—the cutting, adhering, and the paper's very degradation all hint to the maker's hand and labor, not only in capturing the initial images, but in constructing the memory page itself. This element challenges a purely formal reading. Curator: While I recognize the materiality, I believe the deliberate arrangement invites a reading beyond the tangible. Observe how the verticality of the figure standing in the field subtly counterpoints the horizontality of the reclining group, creating a visual tension. The use of semiotics emphasizes a kind of pre-arranged significance behind all this seemingly candid, instant photography. Editor: But this 'significance' is created within very particular, early 20th-century, cultural parameters and means of production. Look at the fashion in which women dressed back then: long gowns even in the field and during a casual 'autotocht'. That dress defines them in a different light that a similar photograph would define a contemporary woman dressed in jeans. Curator: Ultimately, this work presents a series of pictorial elements structured around notions of representation and memory. I’m most intrigued by how Onnen structured the spatial relationship and thematic resonance across these varied images of this time and group of friends. Editor: For me, the very constraints under which those early photographs and sketchbooks came together highlight their role as tangible documents, speaking of both intentional artistic choice and the limitations of the resources available to preserve precious memories and construct identities.
