This sketch of a standing woman was made by Isaac Israels, but I don’t know when. I can really feel his hand moving across the page. There’s a real sense of immediacy. It's like he's trying to catch a fleeting moment, like the woman is about to turn and walk away. The quick, scribbled lines create a sense of movement. The starkness of the black and white adds to this feeling. It's raw, like a thought jotted down in a notebook. The texture feels kind of wispy, almost disappearing into the white of the paper, but on the left page, it’s more solid and dark. I can really see this as a kind of dance between control and chaos. A negotiation with the subject. It reminds me of some of Klimt's sketches, where he's just letting the line wander and find its own way. You get the feeling that these artists are just chasing after something, trying to pin it down before it vanishes.
