Otto Mueller created ‘Zigeunermadonna Mit Planwagen’ using distemper and charcoal on canvas. This wasn’t the high art of oil paint, but a humble combination of pigment, water, and glue. The effect is matte and chalky, emphasizing the rough texture of the canvas beneath. Mueller’s loose application of material mirrors the Romani subject matter, hinting at a nomadic existence. Observe how the charcoal outlines define the figures, in contrast with the delicate handling of the distemper. Look closer, and notice the wagon wheels and baskets sketched in the background, suggesting a life on the move, always making and remaking. Consider, too, the sheer amount of labour represented here, from the manufacture of the materials, to the making of the wagon, to the itinerant subjects of the image. By foregrounding these, Mueller challenges the hierarchies of art and life, giving value to the work of those often unseen. The meaning is embedded in the making, inviting us to appreciate the complex social fabric that gives art its true worth.
