Curatorial notes
Oleksandr Aksinin created this intriguing ink drawing, titled "Aries. April" sometime before his death in 1985. The composition immediately draws us in with its circular frame, within which a stylized head is depicted in profile. Aksinin destabilizes the traditional portrait by combining organic and mechanical forms. Note how a complex structure is attached to the head, resembling a cross between a telescope and a fantastical machine. This apparatus seems to project or extract thoughts, visualized as geometric shapes, suggesting the inner workings of the mind. The gaze itself is transformed into a twisted cord, perhaps symbolizing the subjective and mediated nature of perception. The stark contrast between the dark background and the detailed linework creates a sense of depth and complexity, inviting us to question the boundaries between the human, the technological, and the cosmic. It serves as a powerful commentary on the human condition in an increasingly technological age.
