Cyprián Majerník made this drawing of Don Quijote with brown ink. It's all about the line, isn't it? The process is so upfront, nothing concealed, just the scratch of pen on paper. Look how the texture of those hatch marks builds up the form of the horse, making it look both solid and a little bit unhinged. The lines aren't precious; they overlap and veer off, like thoughts trailing away. Those scribbly marks above the horse, are they trees or just a mood? There’s a frantic energy to the drawing, as if Majerník was trying to capture the essence of Quixote's madness in a flurry of marks. I'm reminded of Daumier's drawings, but with a rawer edge. It's a conversation across time, where each artist adds their own accent to a shared story. I love the way Majerník leaves it open, inviting you to bring your own interpretation to the table.
