This anonymous print, "Gezicht op water met vissers," captures a waterside scene, rendered with etching. The print’s imagery—fishing, trade, travel—speaks to the maritime culture of the Netherlands, the country where it was made. But this is no simple celebration of Dutch mercantile power. Note the figures in the foreground. Are they enslaved persons? Indentured laborers? How does their presence, situated as it is in the lower register of the image, relate to the large sailing vessel that dominates the scene? These are the questions a social historian brings to bear on the image. To understand this artwork, we would need to research the history of trade in the Netherlands, along with its colonial holdings. Through that research, we may arrive at a more complete vision of the artwork’s meaning, and we would begin to understand the social and institutional forces that shaped its production.
