Christoffel van Sichem I created this portrait of Menno Simons sometime before his death in 1624, using woodcut techniques. Considered through the lens of religious identity, this portrait captures Simons, a former Catholic priest who became a key figure in the Anabaptist movement during the Protestant Reformation. It was a time when religious beliefs could define one’s social standing, and even determine one's safety. The book in his hand suggests his devotion to scripture, the foundation of his reformed beliefs. Simons faced persecution for his Anabaptist views. By choosing to depict him, van Sichem situates Simons in a lineage of religious reformers, challenging the Catholic Church's dominance. Looking at this portrait now, we might consider how representations of religious figures have been used to both inspire and divide. It reminds us of the human capacity for both fervent belief and the courage to stand apart, even when faced with societal disapproval.
