This mosaic of the Archangel Gabriel is found within the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, Ukraine, made by Byzantine artists at an unknown date. The image signifies a key theological moment, the Annunciation, which is here given visual form through the patient labour of mosaic. Byzantine art was not just about religious expression, it was a key instrument of imperial power. The mosaic technique, with its glittering tesserae, was particularly suited to convey the wealth and authority of the Byzantine Empire, particularly in public spaces such as this Cathedral. Note the figure's elongated proportions, and the use of stylized drapery: these were visual codes that signified spiritual authority. As a centre for the Eastern Orthodox Church, Kyiv was a key site in the cultural and political orbit of Byzantium. To understand this work fully we need to consider a range of resources. Theological texts help us understand the importance of the Annunciation. Architectural and art historical studies clarify the place of this image within the Cathedral’s broader decorative scheme.
