This untitled piece was made by Marcelle Cahn, sometime around '78, though the materials are a mystery. I get the feeling she embraced the unexpected, letting the materials guide her. It's like a visual game of chance! The surface has a real texture to it. See how the blacks seem almost etched? Then you have the little red circles, all wobbly and unique. Each one is like a fingerprint, showing the artist's hand. I keep thinking about that trail of red dots, like a path or maybe a countdown. Cahn reminds me a little bit of Sophie Taeuber-Arp, with her playful geometry and love of simple forms. But Cahn has this edge, a roughness that makes it feel so personal.
