Robert Frank made this photograph, Park Bench, Paris, using gelatin silver print. The tones of gray are so subtle, it's like he’s painting with light, building layer upon layer of atmosphere. I love the way the park bench in the foreground is so present, so real, while the figures further back seem to fade into the scene. The textures of the gravel and the bark on the trees are rough and granular, and the way the light catches the metal on the bench is so delicate. Look how the composition of the photograph draws your eye between the two benches, inviting you to compare and contrast the forms. This photo reminds me of some of the early street photography, which was a big influence on Frank's work. I love how the picture holds on to a sense of mystery, refusing to give easy answers.
