Herman Heijenbrock made this drawing, *Sculptor and His Sculpture*, with chalk, some time between 1886 and 1948. It’s a scene of an artist at work, and I can almost smell the clay. There he is, in his smock with a cigar in his mouth, considering the figure on the plinth. You can see the adjustments he is planning, the angle he is contemplating. He’s probably thinking about the weight and form of the figure, trying to bring it to life. I love the contrast of dark and light and the way it captures the artist's focus amidst the creative chaos of the studio. Heijenbrock is not just depicting a scene; he's inviting us into the artist's mind, that quiet, intense space where ideas take shape. It reminds me of Rodin in his studio, surrounded by plaster dust and half-formed figures. It's like they’re all in conversation, each artist building on the work of those who came before.
