Patricq Kroon made this drawing, Fabius en de ARP, in 1920. I love the scratchy energy of this drawing, the pure line and the way it creates mood and feeling. The old bearded figure on the left is caught mid-gesture, and it’s almost like you can hear him speaking! There's a lot of drama, and I can really feel the artist's hand moving across the page. I wonder what Kroon was thinking about when he made it. I like to imagine him working quickly and intuitively, responding to the figures as they emerged on the page, letting the lines and marks guide him. It reminds me of the work of artists like George Grosz or Otto Dix, who used drawing to satirize the political and social climate of their time. It makes me think about how we are all, as artists, working in this long conversation with one another, across generations.
