In 1956, Béla Czóbel created "Madár" as an illustration for the Őszi Kert Könyv, using delicate pencil strokes on paper. The drawing presents a composition where a chair takes centre stage, its form defined by loose, yet deliberate lines. The window behind and the bird perched on the chair introduce a sense of space and depth. The varying line weights suggest an interest in capturing light and shadow, with denser marks implying darker areas and lighter strokes revealing brighter surfaces. Czóbel’s technique invites us to consider the essence of form and the underlying structure of the scene. The sketch flirts with semiotics; the bird, a classic symbol, is here destabilized from its fixed meaning and becomes enmeshed within the broader structure of the illustration. The composition invites the viewer to question fixed meanings. Czóbel's structural approach challenges our perceptions of space, representation, and the interpretation of nature through art.
