Alexandre Thiollet created these three studies of ports and a bridge using graphite and gray wash on paper. Notice how water, an elemental symbol of life and fluidity, connects each scene. In the lower view, a mountain looms over the port, a symbol of stability and the eternal. This juxtaposition of mountain and water evokes a timeless tension, a dance between the solid and the flowing. The mountain as a symbol can be traced back to antiquity, where mountains were sacred sites and homes for the gods. The rhythmic movement of the water, the steadfastness of the mountain. Are these not echoes of our own internal struggles? These primal images touch us deeply, stirring a collective memory of nature's power. They resurface across cultures and epochs, evolving yet retaining their essential emotional resonance.
