This unsettling oil painting, by the Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski, presents a disturbing and surreal scene. Beksinski produced this work within a Soviet-controlled state that repressed freedom of expression, requiring all art to be optimistic and uplifting. It depicts a body that seems to be both human and monstrous, decaying and yet strangely alluring, and it directly challenges any prescribed ideal of beauty or social hope. It’s impossible to know exactly what it meant to Beksinski, but we can assume that it reflects a deep-seated unease with the political and social conditions of his time. The artist, who lived through the horrors of World War II and later the oppressive communist regime in Poland, channelled his anxieties and fears into his art. By looking into the social history of Soviet Poland, and by researching the artist’s biography, we can try to understand this image. The power of art lies in its ability to reflect and challenge the norms of its own time, and the historian can act as a translator of these complicated visual symbols.
