Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof made this design for a stained-glass window with pencil, charcoal and pastel, but when I look at it I think of a honeycomb, or maybe a medieval fortress. The colour scheme is subtle, mostly greys, with a few instances of delicate yellow and red. The marks on the surface are delicate and light. The pastel gives a soft glow to the design, especially in the center of the work, where there is a heraldic symbol, like something from a family crest. I can imagine the light filtering through the finished glass, the colours becoming vibrant. It reminds me of the work of Hilma af Klint, another artist who worked with geometric forms. Both artists demonstrate the ongoing exchange of ideas across time, embracing ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
