Maria Vos made this pencil drawing of a landscape, tree branch, glass jars, and a birdcage, sometime in the 19th century. The landscape is quickly sketched. The jars and birdcage, however, have a solidity to them, achieved by close observation and careful shading. Looking closely at the image, we can notice the contrast between the organic forms of the landscape and the manufactured objects. The glass jars are products of industrialization, while the birdcage, though handmade, is a symbol of human control over nature. In the 1800's, glass production became more efficient thanks to industrialization. Glass jars became readily available and mass produced. This drawing encapsulates broader social themes, commenting on human intervention, labor, and our relationship with nature through the lens of everyday objects. By paying attention to the materials and the making, we can appreciate this artwork's cultural significance, blurring the lines between fine art and craft.
