Dimensions Diam. 7 3/4 in. (19.7 cm)

This plate was made of pewter by Samuel Kilbourn sometime before 1839. Pewter is a metal alloy that has been used for centuries to create affordable tableware. The circular form would have been achieved by casting, pouring molten pewter into a mold. The flat surface and raised rim suggests the utility of the object. The material itself is soft, and this particular plate shows its age through scratches and discoloration. You can also see decorative impressions stamped around the rim, adding a touch of refinement to this otherwise functional object. Kilbourn was one of many artisans who met the demands of a growing middle class with aspirations for a well-set table. While not made of precious materials like silver or gold, pewter objects like this plate offered durability and a sense of quality. Next time you set the table, consider the history embedded in even the simplest of objects!
