Editor: This is "Illustration XXXV" by an anonymous artist, currently held at the Harvard Art Museums. The stark contrast of the lines really grabs my attention. What can you tell me about the composition? Curator: Note the symmetrical arrangement and the linear perspective that draws the eye toward the center. The artist utilizes the interplay of positive and negative space to create depth, focusing our attention on the figures of Proteus, Cirene, and Aristeus. Observe how the mountains in the background are parallel to the figures which creates balance within the artwork. Editor: I see what you mean about the balance. It’s quite striking! Thanks for pointing that out. Curator: Indeed. Reflecting on the linear qualities gives us a deeper appreciation.
