Editor: Here we have "Portret van een zittende man en een staande vrouw met medaillon," a photograph by Franz Koebcke, dating somewhere between 1860 and 1900. It's a gelatin-silver print. What strikes me immediately is the formality of the composition, and the balance created between the dark clothing and the stark background. What stands out to you? Curator: Immediately, I'm drawn to the geometry. The photographer carefully stages the subjects; the man seated, provides a solid horizontal base, counterpointed by the verticality of the woman and then further emphasized by her elegant, sweeping dress. The placement of her hand on his shoulder creates a powerful diagonal that bisects the image, connecting them. Observe how the lines converge and diverge, drawing your eye around the frame. What do you think the artist aims to say using such strong pictorial structures? Editor: I hadn’t really thought about the composition as carefully, and the lines involved; I suppose I was only really appreciating the couple in their photograph! Perhaps that geometric structure reinforces their bond? Curator: Possibly, or perhaps it speaks to a desired social order of that era. Notice too the subtle tonal variations within the monochrome palette. Consider the differing textures. How the velvety smooth dress fabric of the female subject contrasts with the sharp, almost etching-like effect of their features. Do these sharp juxtapositions of dark and light contribute something to the atmosphere of the portrait? Editor: Yes, I now notice it also lends a dramatic and even timeless air to the scene! I see it’s all in the relationships, and the balances created. Thank you for that insightful interpretation! Curator: My pleasure, and indeed. We can decode a surprising number of statements solely from the language of forms in a work such as this, by observing intrinsic structures in such photography, a structured view.
