Jean-Denis Nargeot created this print, "Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costumes Parisiens," in 1832. The composition, vertically oriented, presents two figures against a muted backdrop, focusing primarily on their attire. The figures are distinguished by their height; the adult male is significantly taller than the child. The color scheme is dominated by a muted palette of blues and grays, which lends the scene a formal, almost somber tone. Intricate details in the adult’s coat, such as the "brandebourgs" or frogging closures, add textural interest. The clothing, however, serves not only as a visual element but also as a signifier of social status. Here, the careful attention to detail in both figures’ attire hints at the values of appearance and social presentation prevalent in Parisian society at the time. The choice of attire, set against a minimalist background, serves as a commentary on the era's socio-cultural codes, inviting us to consider the values and structures that dictated norms of representation and reception.
