Jan Gerard Waldorp created this print called "Landschap met Diogenes van Sinope in zijn ton" in the late 18th century. During this period, there was a growing interest in classical philosophy, particularly figures like Diogenes, who challenged social norms and advocated for a simple life. Here, Diogenes is seen dwelling inside of a barrel, embracing poverty and self-sufficiency as a form of protest against what he viewed as a corrupt society. The Dutch text beneath the image emphasizes his commitment to this lifestyle. Waldorp's delicate etching captures the philosopher's rejection of materialism, but it also reminds us of the precarity of existence. "I can still furnish my house with my own brain shadows, at least as long as this piece of chalk lasts", the text reads. The image perhaps invites us to consider how societal values shape our sense of self and our relationship to the world around us. It shows the emotional landscape of choosing to live outside of societal structures and expectations.
