This vintage photograph captures a screen in the Grote Kerk in Vianen, though we don't know when, or by whom. The sepia tones give it this dreamy, antique feel, like something from a forgotten album. Looking at the verticals, all those slender columns, it’s hard not to think about process. It's such an organized display, and yet, there’s something deeply human in the craftsmanship. The subtle variations in tone and texture catch the light, revealing the physicality of the stone. If you look closely at the carvings, you can almost feel the artist's hand. The details are precise, but the overall effect is wonderfully imperfect. For me, it evokes the spirit of Agnes Martin, who also embraced the beauty of the line in her work. In the end, art is about embracing ambiguity, and this image captures that perfectly.
