This small print, *Doorkijk op de Rostocker Heide*, by Franz Goerke, captures a moment in time with a monochrome palette. It feels like looking through a dense forest, the trees reaching upwards, framing a glimpse of the sky. What strikes me is the texture; the way the light filters through the leaves creates this incredible depth. You can almost feel the dampness of the forest floor. There's a delicate balance between light and shadow, with the light areas seeming to emerge from the darkness. Look at the way the trees are rendered, they aren't trying to be perfect replications, but impressions of the forest. It reminds me a little of Gustave Courbet, in the way he approached landscape. Goerke wasn't just painting a scene, he was capturing an experience, inviting you to step into this world. Art isn't about answers, it's about the questions it makes us ask.
