This is a sheet with fantasy 'Persian' flowers made by D&C, in which the entire surface is teeming with floral motifs. The flowers, rendered in rich colors, draw on older symbolic traditions. Motifs like these have roots in ancient Persia, where gardens were earthly symbols of paradise, and flowers represented renewal and life. Notice how these forms echo in Renaissance tapestries, where similar patterns signify opulence and harmony. But observe how the ‘Persian’ floral design evolved through trade and cultural exchange. It appears in Iznik pottery and then adapts to European tastes, losing its original spiritual context but gaining a purely aesthetic one. This transformation echoes our own cultural memory, where symbols are continuously reshaped by collective desires and anxieties. The emotional pull of these blossoms lies in their suggestion of growth and beauty. This inherent tension, this eternal cycle, speaks to our deepest longings and our awareness of transience.
