Curator: Let’s take a look at this fascinating print from 1843 titled "De provincie Overijssel. 202,845 inwoners" by J. Schuitemaker. Editor: Whoa, it's got this cool vintage vibe, a real throwback. Almost feels like a newspaper layout, packed with little scenes. Curator: Indeed. It is more than just decoration; observe how Schuitemaker divides the print into four distinct sections. First, a map of Overijssel; second, a picturesque view of Kampen, a town in Overijssel; followed by scenes from Deventer and finishing with a factory from one A. Kentner. Note how all are joined. Editor: Exactly. There’s this orderly thing happening, almost diagrammatic, yet there’s this charming crudeness that comes from the era of printmaking. I can see the work of an artisan trying to evoke Romanticism. Curator: Romanticism definitely breathes through it, notably in the idyllic depiction of Kampen—far from the grittiness of reality. However, the artist does a bit of reportage by portraying scenes from both the factory of A. Kentner, and from an arms forge in Deventer. Note also, the meticulous and minute details in all scenes. The precision here has a conceptual edge to it. Editor: You’re right, these scenes of labour are unusual! Perhaps it’s an attempt to catalogue the achievements of the province? And to include a social document within what's essentially a regional advert! It is really quite fascinating. But for something titled as a magazine for children, I don't see the child appeal... It has a didactic intention overall... Curator: Perhaps we are mistaken in applying modern child appeal in its construction. The overall design has to be viewed in context, with its informative intent and structured design elements that give the composition a semiotic message. Editor: I still like the charming amateur feel. Curator: It offers an unparalleled vision into a past epoch and methodology. A true Romantic interpretation! Editor: It makes me want to visit Overijssel! I hope it's as pretty as Kampen as displayed on this sheet.
