Curatorial notes

Jacques Juillet created this drawing, Trophies with Agricultural Objects, in the 18th century. It assembles agrarian objects into decorative arrangements. These objects - baskets, jugs, gardening tools - are not merely tools but symbols of humanity’s deep connection to the earth. Note the inclusion of musical instruments in some of the trophies. This juxtaposition of the practical and the artistic speaks to a longing for harmony between our labors and our souls. We see similar arrangements in Roman friezes, where instruments of sacrifice mingle with agricultural tools. These motifs evolve throughout history, appearing in Renaissance tapestries and even in modern-day logos for agricultural societies. Each time, these symbols remind us of our origin, our dependence on the earth, and perhaps, our desire for a simpler, more connected existence. This drawing resonates with a collective memory, touching on our primal connection to the land.
