Edward Weston made this photograph, ‘Rain over Modoc Lava Beds’ with gelatin silver. The composition is dominated by monumental cloud formations, pregnant with rain, looming over a stark landscape. I'm imagining Weston out there, lugging his equipment, waiting for the precise moment when the light and shadow play just right. It must have been a real wrestling match with the elements. There's a tension between the heavy, almost theatrical sky and the grounded, desolate earth. It makes you think about the sheer force of nature, how small we are in the face of it. The contrast is so graphic, that the clouds feel like they are about to burst, right here, right now. It puts me in mind of other photographers and painters who have been drawn to similar themes, people like Alfred Stieglitz with his cloud studies, or even some of the Hudson River School painters. There's something timeless about this image, it speaks to something fundamental about our relationship to the world around us.
