Norman Rockwell made *They Remembered Me* with oil on canvas, and it’s interesting to think about how he built up that surface. It's a tonal painting, with those muted browns and tans laid on thinly. I'm drawn to how Rockwell lets the narrative unfold through textures and the layering of objects. The lettering on the Hotel Ritz sign is so casual, almost as if he’s just flicking the paint on. Then you have the contrasting crisp edges of the box, and the softness of the woolen garments in his hands, all playing a part in the story. Look at the way he renders the soldier’s coat, with those short, almost scratchy strokes that describe the worn fabric. It’s not just about showing us a coat, it’s about conveying the experience of wearing it. Rockwell's work feels like a precursor to artists like Alex Katz, who use a similar directness. But whilst Katz finds this in flatness, Rockwell uses texture, creating a tension between realism and artifice. It's a conversation about how we see and remember.
