This watercolour, "Het Residentshuis in de wijk Simpang te Soerabaja" was made in 1809 by C. Coolen. The work strikes us with its clear structure: a horizon line decisively cuts the composition in two. Above it, a hazy sky suggests depth through soft gradations of pale blue and grey. Below, the darker greens and browns of the landscape provide a stark contrast, anchoring the scene. The architectural forms are rendered with precision, reflecting an almost scientific interest in documenting the scene. Notice the central building. It dominates the skyline, flanked by smaller structures and trees, each carefully placed to create a balanced, rhythmic composition. The use of line emphasizes the geometric shapes of the buildings, while the subdued color palette lends a sense of calm and order. Coolen’s attention to detail transforms this landscape into more than just a visual record. It’s an exercise in perspective and spatial organization, inviting us to consider how structures define space and shape our perception of the world.
