This small New Year card was created by the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company around 1890. At first glance, it presents us with a whimsical scene, dominated by an owl in flight carrying a child-like figure and a flag with the year printed on it. The composition is structured by a stark contrast between the dark, textured background of the wintery landscape and the open space on the right, where a greeting might be written. The child in red and the banner reading '1890' introduce bold color to an otherwise monochromatic palette, drawing the eye immediately. This card, like many of its time, uses the visual language of folklore and holiday cheer to engage with its audience. The choice of an owl, traditionally a symbol of wisdom, adds a layer of complexity to the image, associating the New Year with foresight. This interplay of visual elements invites us to consider how even the most commercial of images can reflect deeper cultural meanings, marking time and aspiration.
