This is Niels Larsen Stevns’ sketchbook page, filled with ornament studies and sketches of pots, probably made with graphite and watercolour. Look at how Larsen Stevns approaches these forms. There's a real sense of process here, a mind working through ideas. I’m drawn to the circular motifs. The textures in these sketched ornaments are incredible; layers of hatching create depth. Notice how certain lines are reinforced, almost as if Larsen Stevns is searching for the perfect shape, embracing the imperfections and corrections. On the left, there are hints of color, a soft green that contrasts with the brown paper and the dark graphite. It brings a sense of freshness to the page. It reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint's notebooks, not in style, but in the way it captures the artist’s thought process, the back-and-forth between seeing and recording. It is a conversation that goes beyond fixed ideas.
