This sculpture of Atalante was made by Frédéric Boissonnas at an unknown date using an unknown medium. The whole thing’s a kind of study in contrasts, isn’t it? Look at the way the crisp reproduction of the photo contrasts with the ancient subject matter. I’m especially drawn to the texture of the stone in the sculpture. You can almost feel the cool, rough surface beneath your fingertips. The way the light catches the different planes of the face gives it a sense of depth and volume. The sculptor's attention to detail is remarkable. It reminds me a little of the photogravures by Alfred Stieglitz, where the process of image-making becomes part of the work’s beauty. As in those works, here the image embraces a sense of ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations.
