Curator: This photograph, simply titled "Untitled (sheep wandering around on hillside, crossing small ravine)," was captured by Jack Gould. It’s a small gelatin silver print, only about 6 by 12 centimeters. Editor: It feels nostalgic, almost like a half-remembered dream from childhood. There's a beautiful textural contrast between the sheep's wool and the sparse hillside. Curator: Absolutely. Gould has a real eye for composition. The diagonal line of the ravine creates a dynamic flow, drawing the eye across the image and leading us to the flock. The way the light catches the sheep...it's almost ethereal. Editor: I agree, the flock is carefully arranged. One also cannot help but notice the scale here. One might expect a larger format capturing such a pastoral scene. What did this subject mean to the artist, I wonder? Curator: It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? What a charming, if fleeting, look at rural life. Editor: Indeed. It makes you want to ramble around the countryside.
