Hans Heysen made "The track to the farm" with oil paint in the early 20th century; you can tell he was really working the surface. There’s a great big hay bale dominating the scene, sitting there like a lumpy monument to the harvest. The texture! It looks like he mixed a little sand in with the paint to get that rough, dry feeling. And the way the light hits it—you can almost smell the hay. The whole thing is painted in these muted, earthy tones. Grays, browns, and greens that make you feel like you're standing right there in the field, breathing in the damp air. Now, look at the way he painted the track. Thick strokes, really digging into the canvas. It’s almost like he’s sculpting the mud. Makes you think about Van Gogh, doesn’t it? That same kind of raw energy, that feeling that the painting is alive.
