Yolande Delasser made this picture of a jug sometime between 1855 and 1995, we don't know exactly when. This jug emerges with gentle strokes and a muted palette. The act of painting feels like an embrace of the object, its roundness, its utility. I can imagine Yolande, brush in hand, thinking about everyday life and the beauty that can be found in the simplest things. The blue bird and floral pattern give the jug a kind of personality, like it's telling you a story about long ago. It's interesting to consider the artist's hand, isn't it? Her way of seeing translates into a specific kind of mark-making: a tender and loving observation. Looking at this I wonder how other artists have depicted objects through the ages. We’re all inspired by each other in this ongoing conversation. What do you think?
