Dan Flavin made this 'Monument' with fluorescent light tubes arranged on a wall, probably in the 60’s. It's dedicated to those killed in ambush, a somber, yet visually striking tribute. The red light casts a powerful glow, transforming the surrounding space. It's not about the object, the light itself becomes the medium, and maybe also the message. The simplicity is disarming, right? Just a few tubes, but the effect is monumental. It feels like a pure emotional statement, a visceral reaction to loss. The colour evokes strong feelings, passion and blood, and it kind of gets you in the gut. Flavin's work reminds me of Ad Reinhardt, who explored similar ideas of reduction and essence. It’s a conversation about how little you need to say a lot.
