This black and white photograph captures Emma, Queen Regent of the Netherlands, taking her morning ride in a carriage. You can see the two horses, the carriage itself, and the two servants up front. As a painter, I am always interested in thinking about the material conditions of making. With photography there is the moment of capturing. I wonder what it was like to be the photographer here? What were they thinking as they framed the shot? I think about the texture of the image. The way the light falls on the horses' bodies creates a certain luminosity in the photograph. What did the photographer do to create such texture with a seemingly textureless medium? It makes me think about how artists are in an ongoing conversation. Even an anonymous photographer can offer something to painters through the ages. They inspire our creativity, don't you think? It's all just embodied expression after all, embracing the ambiguity of it all.
