Gerard Bilders made this sketch, Studies van Koeien, using graphite on paper. The material itself is fundamental to the image: the paper offers a receptive, toothy surface, while the graphite, in its dry, slightly reflective darkness, allows for economical mark-making. Bilders would have used these inherent qualities to rapidly capture the essence of his bovine subjects. You can see how the swift strokes convey their bulk and posture. Notice how the varying pressure and angle of the graphite create depth and shadow. It shows his mastery of capturing the subtle nuances of form and light using very simple means. In its own way, the sketch democratizes the art of painting. The simplicity of the materials and method brings art-making closer to everyday experience. The artist's labor is immediately apparent. Such drawings can be as valuable as finished paintings, revealing the artist's thinking. It challenges distinctions between high art and the humbler world of drawing and craft.
