Curatorial notes

Wenceslaus Hollar etched this 'Standing Lion' with a burin on copper. Notice how the artist uses a tight composition and carefully controlled lines to create a striking image of a lion. The compact form is achieved through detailed, parallel hatching which defines the animal's body and mane, giving a sense of volume and texture. The lion stands in profile, a posture traditionally used to display power and nobility. By meticulously rendering each strand of fur, Hollar captures the essence of the animal's strength and regal bearing. The meticulous technique elevates the image beyond a mere depiction, inviting viewers to contemplate broader themes of nature, power, and representation. Although seemingly straightforward, the image, through its intense detailing, encourages us to question the relationship between reality and representation. Hollar transforms the lion into a symbol ripe for interpretation.
