Phillip King's 'Point X' is a geometric party, thrown with wood and a can-do attitude. The simple palette of brown and yellow hints at Modernism, but there’s also something playful about how these shapes are just stacked up, one against the other. Look at how King uses the surface; it's smooth, precise, almost like he's saying, "I know exactly what I'm doing here." That yellow outline on each element is a masterstroke - it gives the piece an optimistic pop. The brown, it acts almost like a shadow, emphasizing depth, whilst the bright yellow adds a sense of energy and levity. 'Point X' reminds me of Anthony Caro’s playful, welded steel sculptures. Both artists are interested in creating dynamic arrangements of shapes in space. But where Caro is all about the line, King is really into these solid, blocky forms. Both of them show that art isn't just about replicating reality. It's about making something new.
