Jacob Maris made this drawing of a sleeping man with graphite on paper. Here, the artist coaxes a range of light and shadow from the simple medium. While it is only a sketch, it is evident that Maris worked meticulously to achieve this study of the man’s posture, and the soft folds of his clothing. The qualities of graphite allow for a great level of detail to be rendered onto the page, through the control of line and pressure. In the nineteenth century, it was common practice for artists to create studies of people to understand the human form, and to document their observations of the world around them. This drawing is a window into a specific moment, captured by the artist's hand. It gives us a glimpse into the world of everyday life and labor. Maris skillfully transformed humble materials into a sensitive portrayal of human rest. This quiet scene reminds us to appreciate the labor and processes involved in the creation of art, and to recognize the value of craft and the importance of everyday experiences.
