This satirical hand-colored etching, “Morning, or, the Man of Taste,” by British artist Henry William Bunbury depicts a wealthy gentleman seated at a table, seemingly in a state of disgust at the various dishes being presented to him. This humorous print from 1802–1811 lampoons the excesses of British high society, especially the obsession with food and fashion, by depicting the man’s extravagant breakfast spread, which includes a variety of foods including fish, a roast, and cakes, while the gentleman’s extravagant attire and the presence of several servants further highlight his wealth. This print is an example of the genre of caricature, a type of art that uses exaggeration to make fun of its subjects. This work is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection in New York City.
