Curator: Jan Siberechts's "Landscape with Rainbow, Henley-on-Thames" presents a pastoral scene, rich in detail. Editor: The painting strikes me as a study in contrasts; the dark, looming storm above versus the idyllic village and vibrant fields below. Curator: Note Siberechts's masterful use of light and shadow to create depth, and how the rainbow serves as a compositional bridge. Editor: I'm fascinated by the depictions of labor; the fields cultivated, the cattle grazing, all hinting at the agricultural practices of the time and the human impact on the landscape. Curator: Yes, the painting beautifully illustrates the structured arrangement of elements, a clear hierarchy established through perspective and chromatic values. Editor: I see how the materials—the pigments, the canvas—were employed to not only represent the landscape but also to comment on the relationship between the community and their environment. The painting could have also been commissioned to highlight the abundance of agricultural production. Curator: Precisely. Siberechts offers us a visually ordered interpretation of the world. Editor: It is a compelling glimpse into the relationship between labor, land, and representation.

Jan Siberechts may have produced this painting for a landowner to display his ownership and wealth. It also shows an interest in nature and the effects of the weather. The figures to the left, pulling the barge along the River Thames, remind us that this is a working landscape, and that waterways were vital for the transportation of food and goods to and from urban centres. Siberechts specialised in ‘birds-eye’ views of the landscape, often centred on an important country house. Gallery label, July 2024
