Adrianus Eversen created this sketch of a street view with pencil on paper, likely in the mid-19th century. At this time, urban spaces in Europe were undergoing massive transformations with industrialization and population growth. Eversen, situated within this changing landscape, offers a glimpse into the era's focus on capturing the everyday. Though minimal, the sketch invites reflection on how public spaces were experienced and represented. We might consider how gender, class, and social roles would have shaped one’s interaction with the street. Who had access to these spaces, and who was marginalized? Eversen was interested in exploring the rapidly changing world around him and his sketches allow us to wonder about how the street may have shaped his sense of self and belonging. "Gezicht op een straat" serves as an invitation to reflect on the streets we inhabit today, to consider how these spaces shape our identities, and to question whose stories are told and whose are erased in the ever-evolving urban landscape.
