This gelatin silver print, Group on bench--Los Angeles, was made by Robert Frank, sometime during his life. Look at how the light and shadow play across the surface, creating a sense of depth and mystery. It’s a reminder that photography, like any art form, is a process of selection and interpretation. I’m drawn to the way Frank captures the texture of everyday life. You can almost feel the grit of the city, the weight of the unspoken stories these people carry. There is such a high contrast here, as though the people have been caught in headlights. It’s hard to tell if they have been captured candidly, or if they are posing. Maybe they are used to being photographed. Frank's work always reminds me of Walker Evans, another photographer who found beauty in the mundane. Both artists invite us to slow down and really see the world around us, to appreciate the strange beauty of ordinary moments. What do you see?
