Leo Rubinfien made this photograph at Canal Street and Broadway in New York in 2006. The woman has seen something. I can see it in her eyes. She has the look of someone in shock. Like a deer in headlights. It makes me wonder what it was like being the photographer in that moment. I imagine Rubinfien wanted to capture something that might be missed in the hustle and bustle of the city. What was it like to come across this woman on the street? What do you say? What do you do? How do you deal with that as a person? How do you deal with it as an artist? I see this interplay between observation and feeling in the shades of light and dark that capture the emotions that day stirred up. There are so many of these small moments happening all the time. It takes a person with a sensitivity to the world to capture it in a photograph. It makes me think differently about all the other photos I see of New York. What other feelings are being caught on camera?
