Gustave Loiseau made this painting of The Normandy River with what looks like small brushstrokes, building up the image like a mosaic. I love how he uses these tiny marks to suggest the shimmer of light on the water and the rustling of leaves. The color palette is so subtle, mostly greens and yellows, but there's a real sense of movement and depth, isn't there? I'm drawn to the way Loiseau handles the reflections in the water, it's not a perfect mirror image but more of an impression. See how the green paint seems to dissolve and bleed into the surface, it's like the world is vibrating. It reminds me a little of Monet, but Loiseau has a slightly different sensibility, a little more grounded maybe. It's like he's saying that the world is always in flux, always changing.
