Larry Fink made this gelatin silver print, Tavern on the Green, New York City, I'm guessing sometime in the last 50 years, and the way he's used light reminds me of chiaroscuro painting. The light feels like it's being thrown onto the forms, like actors on a stage set. I wonder about the woman in the centre, did she pose, or was she caught off guard? The lack of depth, the blackness of the backdrop, it flattens the image, and yet the moment feels so alive. I can imagine him, Larry Fink, watching, waiting for just the right moment. Looking at her smile, I'm reminded of Diane Arbus' portraits, there's something vulnerable and deeply human. I wonder what conversations Larry Fink and Diane Arbus might have had if they were ever in a room together. The best art happens when artists inspire one another, right? It’s an ongoing dialogue.
