René Magritte painted this oil on canvas, "Perspective: Madame Récamier de David," and what immediately grabs me is the brown, ochre, and red palette that feels both classical and unsettling. I can almost see Magritte standing before the canvas, carefully rendering the scene with a smooth, deliberate touch. It must have been a trip to paint an upright coffin where you’d usually find a reclining figure. What do you think he was thinking as he labored over the wood grain and the metallic glint of the coffin's hardware? Did he laugh to himself as he added the final touches, or was he lost in thought, contemplating mortality and representation? It reminds me of other works where artists riff on art history, turning familiar images on their heads. Ultimately, it’s like all art-making, an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, where artists are constantly responding to and inspiring one another's creativity. I find the whole thing, well, strangely alive!
